YS Capers

You boot it up and immediately wonder if you're looking at the right game. YS Capers doesn't announce itself with a title card or a blast of chiptune fanfare—it just sort of exists on your Spectrum screen, all blocky sprites and crude scrolling, waiting to tell you what it wants.

This is a platform puzzle hybrid from 1990, though the pedigree remains delightfully murky. Damian Scattergood's name is attached, but verifying anything beyond that becomes an archaeological dig through floppy disk collections and garage sale catalogs. It's exactly the kind of thing someone would have pulled from a compilation or borrowed from a friend, played for twenty minutes without quite understanding the rules, then filed away in memory as "that weird Spectrum game."

Mechanically, YS Capers refuses to stay in one lane. You're jumping across platforms—that much is clear—but the levels are built around puzzle logic rather than reflexes. You collect things, move blocks, flip switches, and backtrack. The controls feel stiff by design, not incompetence; movement has weight. This isn't Jet Set Willy's fluid floatiness. Every jump requires commitment, which turns the platforming into something closer to navigation than performance. The game never rushes you, and that restraint becomes its own kind of tension.
