Om Booly

Denne anmeldelsen er ikke oversatt ennå — vi viser originalen (English).

Booly was released in 1991 by the French company Loriciels, and it is a logic game in its purest form: no story, no characters, just coloured blocks, a mouse and a ticking clock.

Each level presents a pattern of interconnected blocks in several colours, and the goal never changes — turn everything grey. The catch: a click never changes just one block. A whole pattern of neighbouring squares shifts colour along with it, so a move that fixes one corner of the puzzle scrambles another. Winning means understanding how the blocks are wired together and working out a sequence of clicks that ends in uniform grey — under a time limit that will not let you experiment forever. There are three hundred levels plus an editor for building your own sets, and Bach plays in the background, giving the puzzling an almost meditative air.

If the principle reminds you of the Lights Out puzzle, note that Booly got there years earlier — it belongs to the same family of toggle puzzles, only with extra colours and more intricate connections. Those connections are why the game can still occupy a mind today: this is not about reflexes but about pure deductive planning.

The weaknesses should be named up front. The presentation is austere to the point of asceticism, three hundred levels is a marathon rather than an invitation, and the timer occasionally punishes careful thought — the very thing the game is built on. Booly is simply a puzzle for people who truly want a puzzle, and to them it offers honest, undiluted thinking of a kind hardly manufactured any more.
