America's Army

America's Army, launched in 2002, holds a strange and notable place in gaming history: it was developed and published by the actual United States Army, distributed free of charge as an official recruitment and public-relations tool. Built on the Unreal engine, it presented itself as a tactical, team-based first-person shooter that aimed for a more grounded, procedure-driven feel than the run-and-gun shooters dominating the market at the time.

The design leaned hard into realism and discipline. Players first had to complete training courses, including a marksmanship range, before entering multiplayer, and matches emphasized objectives, teamwork and the consequences of taking fire rather than twitch reflexes alone. A clever conceit made every player see themselves as the U.S. side and their opponents as the enemy, sidestepping the awkwardness of anyone "playing" as hostiles. It was surprisingly polished for a free product and built a substantial online community.

Its legacy is genuinely double-edged and much discussed: praised as an accomplished tactical shooter given away at no cost, and scrutinized as state-funded military marketing aimed at young players. Either way it was influential, spawning multiple versions over the following decade and standing as a landmark example of a government using a video game as outreach.
