Torpedo

Torpedo is a ZX Spectrum release credited to Jatekgyaros and dated 2005 in this record. That year matters. The Spectrum's commercial life ended around the turn of the nineties, so this is not a period title at all but a product of the later homebrew scene that has kept writing software for the machine ever since.

What changed for that scene was the tooling, not the target. Authors still work with the same Z80 processor, the same 48 or 128 kilobytes of memory, and the same display where colour is stored per eight-by-eight block rather than per pixel, which produces the attribute clash the machine is famous for. But the code is now written on a PC and only tested on the Spectrum, so far more iterations are possible.

The name Jatekgyaros points to Hungary. The Hungarian Spectrum community was substantial in the eighties and, unlike many national scenes, never fully disbanded, which is why new tapes and disk images still come out of it.

The catalogue entry gives no genre and no player count, so the honest description stops at the platform: a compact program built for a machine with tiny memory and no hardware scrolling.

New Spectrum releases no longer circulate on cassette but as TAP or TZX files, or as disk images. The TZX format even preserves the exact timing of the magnetic signal, so programs with custom loaders still work. Homebrew authors typically publish the game for free and press a small run of physical tapes with printed inlays as a nod to period practice.
