2002 FIFA World Cup

2002 FIFA World Cup is a football game released for the World Cup in South Korea and Japan. It is EA Sports' second official World Cup game and appeared on the GameCube, Windows, PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and Xbox.

Several teams worked on it. The foundation came from EA Canada together with the Creations studio, the PC and sixth-generation console versions were assisted by Britain's Intelligent Games, and the GameCube version had additional help from Japan's Tose Software. EA Sports published it in North America and Europe and Electronic Arts Square in Japan. In Europe it was also one of the GameCube's launch titles.

The content is exactly what the title promises: you play the qualifiers and the tournament itself with every participating national side and stadium. The engine derives from the FIFA line of the period but is noticeably more arcade-minded — the game aimed at fast, showy matches rather than tactics, because tournament editions always targeted casual players too.

That is also the main criticism it drew. Against the main FIFA series it offered fewer modes, no club management and less depth, at the same price. It was a classic seasonal release that sold because a tournament happened to be on.

Today it is interesting mostly as a time capsule. The squads reflect 2002, the commentary talks about the players of the day, and the whole package preserves a tournament people remember for South Korea's surprising run and for France going out in the group stage.

How EA used this kind of release is worth noting. Tournament editions shipped outside the main annual FIFA cycle and existed to keep the brand on shelves away from the autumn season. The model worked and EA repeated it for later World Cups and European Championships, until tournament content moved directly into the main game as a free update — which ended the whole category.
