A dungeon that isn't afraid to be harsh with the player. The Dark Heart of Uukrul throws you into darkness without maps, without a guide, and without mercy — just you, a text screen, and a mouse cursor guiding you through a grid-based castle filled with demons and logic traps.

It's a hybrid thing between a classic dungeon crawler and a puzzle box. You venture through the depths of Uukrul, collect magical artifacts, solve mechanisms, and above all try not to lose your last character before you reach the very heart of darkness. The game gives you only basic stats — hit points, mana, abilities. The rest you have to piece together from your own exploration. When you enter a room and get a few sentences without an image, it depends on your reading comprehension and deduction what's happening.
Playing is slow and thoughtful, exactly as it should have been in the eighties. Every step counts, because resources are limited and random combat will likely become fatal. The mechanics aren't complex, but their combination creates pressure. The worst part is when you realize you've been moving in the wrong direction and the treasure was on the other side. A text interface without unnecessary flourishes — just information and choices.

Fifty years before metroidvanias, there was already expansion through a castle with no marked path. Uukrul doesn't bore you with transcriptions of your effort. The difficulty level isn't a rubber stamp on your leg, it's a cage without freedom of movement. People remember the game more as a ghost than as a hero — and that's right.

Returning to it today means forgetting tutorials and graphics. It means staring at pure text for a while and seeing if your brain can manage to translate instructions into real movement through the game world. Anyone who can handle older games without a pocket guide and with the patience for long-term problem solving will be surprised — Uukrul isn't a mockery, it's a serious puzzle from the old world.
