Smurf: Rescue in Gargamel's Castle was released in 1982 by Coleco and is listed here for the Atari 2600. It came out of the Smurfs cartoon licence, which was in heavy demand at the start of the 1980s and appeared on several systems of the day.

The game is a platformer, though not in the later sense of the word. The character walks left to right, hops fences and obstacles, and the difficulty comes from unforgiving collision — touching anything ends a life regardless of how slight the contact was. The pace follows from that: you advance carefully rather than quickly.

On the Atari 2600 the game was praised mainly for how it looked. The console offered severely limited means of drawing moving objects, yet this title managed a recognisable character against coloured backgrounds that change between screens. Next to the ordinary output of the period that was a visible step up.

The record notes support for more than one player. In 1982 that usually meant taking turns with a single controller and competing for a score, not two people on screen at once — the hardware had neither the inputs nor the power for that.
