Sherlock Holmes - The Case of the Beheaded Smuggler reached the ZX Spectrum in 1988 and is filed under the Sherlock Holmes series. The detective from Arthur Conan Doyle stories was ideal material for early computer games: investigation means gathering information and drawing conclusions, and neither activity places any demand on hardware.

In 1988 text-driven adventures still held a solid position on the Spectrum. A parser accepted commands of two or three words, a static illustration filled the upper part of the screen, and memory was conserved by assembling descriptions from reused fragments of text. It was the cheapest way to offer a long story on an eight-bit machine.

Investigation as a game form has an advantage action titles lack: the player does not need speed, only attention. Taking notes on paper was a normal part of playing these releases, and many of them were designed on the assumption that the player would do exactly that.
