Oystron

Oystron is an Atari 2600 game from 1997, and the date already tells the important part: the console was twenty years old by then and long out of production. It was written by Piero Cavina and is one of the most frequently cited titles from the homebrew scene that began producing new Atari 2600 software well after official support ended.\n\nThe design is simple and purely arcade: you steer a ship in a side view, collect objects, push them into position and fend off attackers. What matters is that the game does not merely imitate old templates but adds an economy of its own - you constantly choose between gathering and fighting, which creates a tension many original cartridges lacked.\n\nTechnically Oystron is remarkable for how it handles the hardware. The Atari 2600 has no frame buffer; every scan line must be programmed in real time, and the machine offers 128 bytes of RAM. Homebrew authors of the nineties understood the system better than most of its original programmers and pulled more colours and more moving objects out of it than was usual in 1980.\n\nThe game is single-player and a session is short, as suits the platform.
