When I fired up Klax on the 8-bit last year, I realized this wasn't about pieces falling and lining up in rows. Instead, in this logic board game, you defend against an advancing wave of enemies using a paddle and tiles you can launch to stop them. It's weirdly designed, almost frustrating.

Klax is basically tower defense mixed with puzzle-strategy elements. A stream of creatures or obstacles advances across the screen, and you have to neutralize them with tiles you collect and hurl using a paddle-like arm. Matching symbol combinations protect you, build combos, or rack up points. It's more about precise timing and planning than reflexes, though those come in handy too.

The controls are simple, almost primitive — move, aim, throw. The problem is that the graphics and sound are bland, even though the Atari 2600 wasn't exactly cutting-edge by 1990. The game feels like something that could've run in the early '80s. That's not a criticism of aesthetics — it's just fact. Then comes the real issue: the game drags after the first five minutes. Your motivation tanks because you realize there's no escalating challenge, just tedious attrition.

Klax deserves credit for originality in concept, at least. When everyone and their mother were playing Tetris or some falling-block variant, Atari was pushing something different. But originality alone doesn't cut it when playing feels like a waste of time. For '90s players, it was just meh.

Today you should only check it out if you're collecting everything from Atari's catalog or want to see what happened when developers experimented outside the beaten path. You can get through it in a browser in a few minutes as a curiosity. Nothing more.
