Om spillet

1992, midnight, parents asleep. I'm sitting in front of the monitor, frantically clicking my mouse, while a dozen paratroopers rain down from the sky at once and I know I won't catch them all. Night Raid was exactly that kind of game — unassuming, without story, without fireworks, but with that particular kind of addiction you can't explain to mom.

The premise is brutally simple. You've got a turret on the roof of a little house in the middle of nowhere. The enemy sends waves of paratroopers. You shoot. That's the whole story and the whole motivation — no cutscenes, no dialogue, just falling silhouettes and a ticking score. Argo Games didn't bother with narrative that year. They were figuring out if it would be frustrating enough to bring you back.

The mechanics are straightforward: you rotate the turret, aim, shoot. Except every shot costs you a point from your score, so blind firing gets expensive fast. In later waves, the tempo kicks into high gear — more chutes, incoming from all sides, and suddenly you're not deciding whether to shoot, but where to shoot first. That's the moment the game stops being a toy and becomes a problem. A pleasant problem.

What Night Raid brought was something that today goes by "pick up and play" — you start it, in thirty seconds you know everything, in five minutes you want to play again. In 1992, shareware was full of things like this, but this particular loop — shoot, conserve points, can't keep up, lose, try again — had a good grip. The graphics were functional back then, bare-bones today. The sounds from a PC speaker or Sound Blaster did their job. None of it will surprise you now, but it won't offend either.

Night Raid – screenshot 3

Today Night Raid is mainly for those hunting pure high-score reflex action without modern window dressing. Five minutes waiting for a bus, a break at the computer — this game has just the right length for a hit. Fire it up in your browser, no installation, no DOSBox required, and a nostalgia kick is guaranteed for anyone who knew it the first time around. Everyone else will play it, shrug, and move on. Which is fair — Night Raid never pretended to be more than what it is.
