NHL 99 shipped in 1998 under the EA Sports label, and the version filed here is the Nintendo 64 one. The number in the title refers to the season rather than the release year, since annual sports franchises always ran ahead of the calendar to reach shelves before the competition started.

Electronic Arts' hockey line was among the strongest things sports games offered in the nineties. It worked from a simple premise: the controls had to be quick enough for the sport to feel like hockey, and deep enough that a pass, a shot, and a body check were clearly different actions. Rosters, a season mode, and statistics sat on top of that so a player could run a team over the long term.

The Nintendo 64 brought one decisive advantage to this genre, namely four controller ports built into the console. A four-player game on one sofa was the reason sports titles sold on that machine, and the catalogue reflects it by listing one or more players.

Cartridges also imposed limits. Disc-based hardware could carry long commentary tracks and licensed music, while a cartridge had to ration capacity, so developers spent what they had on smooth skating and responsive controls instead of presentation.

Annual sports releases share a peculiar fate: each new edition effectively erases the previous one from retail, because players want current rosters. Older editions are therefore harder to track down despite selling in enormous numbers, and their value today lies in nostalgia rather than in the statistics they carried. They also remain easy to return to, since a match needs no explanation.
