Summer 1993, speakers blaring B-side music, and little animated characters bouncing across the screen — characters I didn't know by name, but instantly recognized: this is that British Codemasters school. Cheap, colorful, slightly chaotic, and yet mysteriously addictive.

Kwik Snax is an arcade action game where you control characters from the Dizzy universe — specifically members of the so-called Yolkfolk party. The plot is exactly as absurd as it needs to be: the gang annoyed a powerful wizard named Zaks who was trying to catch some sleep, and in revenge he trapped each of them in their own themed world. Denzil ended up in an icy kingdom, old Grandpa in the land of cuckoo clocks. Codemasters were literally building everything around the Dizzy universe back then, and Kwik Snax is one of many satellite projects orbiting that yellow egg icon.

Gameplay is built on a simple principle: you move across the screen, collect food items, and deliver them to the right places while dodging enemies with predictable but quite annoying AI. Controls are straightforward, levels aren't too big, difficulty ramps up gradually. Nothing revolutionary — and that was the point. Codemasters were targeting kids with pocket money buying games at the supermarket for a few quid back then. And that's exactly how Kwik Snax looks and plays.

What I remember most is that specific British budget software feel: the game looks almost like a toy, but underneath there's a solid arcade loop that keeps you hooked longer than you'd expect. The graphics are pretty fresh for DOS, the sounds are exactly as beepy as the EGA era demanded. Today the game has aged honestly — it's short, lacks depth, but it's neither clumsy nor broken. It plays exactly as it looks.

These days it'll be appreciated mainly by those who love early '90s British action games or remember the Dizzy series as part of their childhood. It's not a hidden gem you'll discover and kick yourself for ignoring. It's more like a nice quarter-hour of nostalgia — perfect for one afternoon, perfect in a browser, no installation and no guilty conscience.
