Blood and Magic

Summer of 1996, hot afternoon, me sitting at the monitor dragging soldiers across a map in something that looks like Warcraft, but swears by Forgotten Realms. Blood and Magic from Tachyon Studios was one of those games nobody wrote much about, but you stumbled upon it by chance and then spent more hours with it than planned.

It's a real-time strategy set in the world of Dungeons and Dragons, specifically in the Forgotten Realms setting. If I remember correctly, the game was the first RTS to hold a D&D license, which in 1996 was marketing gold in itself. The core loop is classic: you build a base, gather resources, train units, and destroy the enemy. The genre template worked reliably back then, and there's no reason to break the mold here.

The key difference from the competition was a unit system inspired by the D&D bestiary. Magic and blood as resources, transforming fallen enemies into your own minions — that was an idea that made sense in a universe full of undead and summoned creatures. But in practice it led to a rut: once you figured out a working unit combo, there wasn't much reason to experiment. The balance between factions and unit types wasn't quite nailed down, and that takes its toll on replay value.

Graphics-wise, the game looked solid at the time. The isometric map was clear, units recognizable at a glance, and animations did their job. Sound design and voice acting fit the standards of the era. Nothing breathtaking, but nothing to be ashamed of either. Today the graphics hit like all isometric work from that era — nostalgically digestible for those who lived through it, not particularly appealing to anyone else.

It's aged unevenly. The core game loop works, controls are straightforward, but the repetition and balance issues I mentioned push it more into curiosity territory than classic status today. Anyone who spent hours with Warcraft or Command and Conquer in the mid-nineties could have pleasantly killed an afternoon with Blood and Magic back then. If you're hunting for RTS games from that period now, you'll probably reach for the proven hits first. But if you're curious what a D&D license looked like in real-time strategy before anyone else tried it, this game will answer that — and it won't take long to figure out why nobody really picked it up for the next twenty years.
