Pacmania

Friday afternoon, 1991. A friend pulled out a floppy disk and said: "That's almost Pac-Man." Almost. That word should be in the logo.

Pacmania from 1990 is exactly what the name suggests — a clone of the famous Pac-Man by Namco, this time ported to MS-DOS by Sophisticated Software Systems. Yellow ball, maze, dots, ghosts. The goal is the same as always: eat everything, don't touch the enemy, collect the bonus.

The controls work, the maze either scrolls or fits on screen, the ghosts chase you according to expected logic. But that's where the entire experience stands or falls — if you come with expectations of the original arcade version, the 1990 PC version will greet you with CGA graphics and PC speaker tones that would make even a Sound Blaster weep. The playability is solid, the ball's response to keyboard input is manageable, but that spark of arcade precision just isn't there. The movement has that typical PC "woodenness" at times, where the machine processes input differently than an arcade joystick would.

Why does anyone remember it? Probably because back when you didn't have a console or an arcade hall around the corner, this was available. The MS-DOS computer was at home, the disk could be borrowed. Pacmania served exactly that purpose — a cheap, instant substitute. Today? The graphics and sound belong more in the "historical document" category than "retro pleasure." Unlike games that aged well, this one aged exactly as you'd expect from a budget commercial clone.

Today it will mainly be appreciated by those who want to reminisce about what PC gaming looked like before VGA and AdLib arrived. As a historical curiosity of the DOS era it makes sense — run it in a browser via DOSBox, spend twenty minutes, nod in acknowledgment, and go play the original instead. But at least you know what you had in the nineties when you didn't have the original.
