Quiz & Dragons is Capcom's 1992 arcade trivia game, produced in the same period as Street Fighter II but aimed at a completely different sort of player. The design wraps a straight general-knowledge quiz in fantasy dressing: your character advances across a board-game map, the machine rolls a die for you, and you decide which of the reachable squares to spend those steps on.
Landing on a square produces a multiple-choice question, and the clock is part of the scoring — answer quickly and you earn more. Points and collected gems translate into your ability to defeat the monsters blocking the route, so a wrong answer costs health as well as score. Certain squares offer relief instead: a health top-up, or a hint that strips away some of the wrong options. It is a smarter structure than it needed to be. A pure quiz would not have held a cabinet for long, but the movement choices, the die roll and the combat give the player something to weigh between questions.
Where it falls down today
The questions. Everything is in English and pitched at an American audience in 1992: history, sport, entertainment, science. That is two barriers stacked on each other. Trivia about baseball statistics, US television and the celebrities of the moment will defeat plenty of native speakers born after the fact, and once you stop knowing the answers the game degenerates into guessing. A later variant swapped in questions about Capcom's own catalogue, which is a considerably more approachable version for a retro audience.
Presentation is exactly what the era and the hardware suggest: clean hand-drawn character art, legible text, brisk music, no wasted screen space. Nothing about the craft has aged badly; only the content has. It survives today mainly through compilations — Capcom Classics Collection Volume 2 on PlayStation 2 and Xbox, and Capcom Classics Collection: Remixed on PSP.
