Master of Magic

Master of Magic for the ZX Spectrum was released in 1985 under the M.A.D. label, Mastertronic's Added Dimension budget line. It is worth saying up front that this has nothing to do with the 1994 strategy game of the same title; the names simply collide, something that happens often in retro catalogues.

No individual author is credited in the record, which describes a single-player game viewed from above. That matches how larger exploration-based action games were built on the Spectrum in the mid-eighties: a top-down layout saved memory, because one tile set could serve dozens of rooms.

In 1985 a Spectrum had forty-eight kilobytes and one colour attribute per eight-pixel block. Budget developers worked around those limits by assembling sprawling mazes from repeated elements and putting the difficulty into navigation and resource management rather than into the amount of artwork on screen.

The M.A.D. imprint meant a cassette selling for a couple of pounds. Titles on that label had no marketing budget behind them, so the game design itself was the only thing that could set them apart, and several of them were genuinely inventive as a result.

Mastertronic releases had another practical property: they loaded in a single pass from cassette and never asked the player to sit at the tape deck between levels. Tape loading took several minutes and was the most fragile part of the entire eight-bit experience, so game design bent around what could be held in memory at once. That is why titles from this period have such a tight structure and reuse elements a modern eye would call frugal.
