Taco Bell? Seriously? Yep, in 2000 they decided a fast-food chain needed an adventure on MS-DOS. Tasty Temple Challenge is this weird piece of promotional software where some developer got tasked with wrapping the brand into a point-and-click game and making it actually work somehow.

You're off on some adventure where everything revolves around a temple and Taco Bell — honestly, the plot matters less than the color of beans on the box. What matters is you've got your classic scene view, a magnifying glass for picking up items, and dialogue with various characters pushing you forward. The designer probably thought: point-and-click game = fun, so if I slap a burrito on it, everyone who's hungry and owns a computer will play it.

Controls are standard for the era — you click, explore, combine things in your inventory. Graphics are your typical average DOS fare, trying to be cheerful but looking more like it was drawn by a company on a weekend contract. Character animations are stiff, colors are dull, environments have zero polish. Puzzles aren't tricky — try everything with everything, eventually it'll work. Gameplay pace is sluggish because everything loads from old hardware.

Games like this exist so someone plays it once, tells themselves it exists, and forgets about it. There's no artistic vision, it's not experimental work, it's not even good. It's pure advertising trying to masquerade as a game. The '90s had plenty of this — corporations thinking interactive content was the right trend. Tasty Temple Challenge is proof they thought wrong.

Today you can look at it as a curiosity, which is probably the best thing you can say about it. It's not the worst DOS adventure you've played, but it's definitely the most pointless. If you want to experience what it looked like when corporations randomly attempted to gamify their brand, sure. Otherwise grab literally anything else from that era — it'll be a better use of your time.
