Midnight Resistance

Midnight Resistance runs on one clean idea. You move through a scrolling stage, you shoot in eight directions, and the weapons you shoot with have to be earned. Certain defeated enemies drop keys, and those keys are spent in an armoury between stages. Every run therefore contains a small economic decision: buy a decent gun now, or hoard keys for something better and risk not surviving long enough to spend them.

The 1989 arcade original used a rotary joystick that let players lock their aim independently of their movement. Home hardware had no such controller, so conversions map aim-locking to a button instead. The Mega Drive version works that way too, and mastering the lock while still dodging is the central skill the game asks for.

The perspective is side-on, the pace is high, and the difficulty assumes the arcade convention that you will learn the layouts by repetition. Enemies arrive in waves from both edges of the screen, and bosses are typically large multi-part machines with separately destructible sections. The Mega Drive handled big sprites and steady scrolling comfortably, so the port still holds together.
