The SD Gundam brand took the mecha designs of the Gundam franchise and shrank them into squat, cute proportions. In Japan that format supported its own toys, comics and games, and it was flexible enough to be combined with almost anything. This 1993 title pairs SD Gundam with motifs from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the Chinese historical epic that has been a fixture of Japanese popular culture for decades.

The cabinet was released by Banpresto, a company long tied to Bandai licences. The game is catalogued as action, single-player, and it is a characteristic product of the Japanese arcade scene of the early nineties: bold graphics, brisk pacing, an immediately legible goal, and a session length calibrated to the fact that you are feeding coins into a machine.

Games like this were barely distributed outside Japan, because without familiarity with both source properties half the point evaporates. That is precisely why it is worth attention now, since it documents a licence combination Western production would never have attempted.
