Mystic Towers

I expected a fantasy dungeon crawler, and Mystic Towers surprised me — for better and worse. Right on the first screen you're complaining about a corpse blocking your path, and you already know these guys weren't interested in making sense of things. 1994, MS-DOS, ambitions of an adventure with RPG elements, execution rather mediocre.

You wander through towers full of bats and skeletons, collecting weapons and prayers, built on a classic turn-based system. You get caught in purely pointless encounters — you meet a bat, swing your weapon, win, move on. Both sides get one action per turn, the game doesn't have any rhythm. The inventory looks like a notepad, the graphics are a Ultima knock-off with ambitions it didn't deserve. Animation? Flickering little figures fifteen pixels wide. Soulless dialogue, text without sarcasm or playfulness.

What really got me isn't the primitiveness itself — I accept that as a tax on the year and budget. It's that Mystic Towers has no character. It's not entertainingly archaic like Eye of the Beholder, it's not chaotic like the old Chaos Strikes Back. It's just... thin. Not enough challenge, not enough story, not enough reason to spend your time on it. You play it expecting something to happen, but nothing does.

Today you'd only play it as an archive piece — if you're curious what an adventure looked like on regular PCs without much wit or resources. In gaming history it occupies a spot somewhere between a forgotten attempt and traditional obscurity. It's not a badly made game, it's just... bland. And blandness is worse than a mistake.
