Cyber Sled

Cyber Sled was built by Namco in 1993 as an arcade duel between combat vehicles in an environment assembled from flat polygons. Namco had its own 3D display hardware at the time and used it for what it did best — fast confrontations in an open arena.

Control defines this game. The vehicle is driven with two sticks, one per track, so turning means pushing them against each other and a spin on the spot comes from opposing their directions. It is an unusual scheme, instantly graspable, and it gives movement real weight. Firing sits on the same sticks, which makes aiming and manoeuvring a single act.

The main mode is a match against another person. Cabinets were joined back to back in pairs, and the tension came from knowing your opponent was sitting a couple of metres away — this format is exactly what made arcades a social space in the early nineties. Bouts are short, so players cycled through the machine quickly.

1993 places it as polygonal graphics were only entering coin-op machines. Objects carry no textures yet, but the scene runs smoothly and, crucially, allows free movement in every direction, something flat sprites could never offer. This wave determined what console games would look like a few years later. Namco kept pushing in this direction, and twin-stick control briefly became a signature of its vehicle games — one of the things emulation reproduces least comfortably.
