Palace Software was among the British studios of the mid-eighties that took presentation seriously, and The Sacred Armour of Antiriad from 1986 demonstrates it. The game blends action and exploration in a side view: your character moves through connected screens of a post-apocalyptic world, searching for components of a powerful suit of armour, and each piece recovered grants an ability that opens areas previously out of reach. That structure, where the map unlocks itself according to what you have collected, was still novel in 1986 and anticipated what would later become the defining pattern of an entire genre. The Commodore 64 version benefits from the machine's respectable palette and hardware sprites, so both the character and the environments carry real detail and the bleak future atmosphere holds together. The box included a printed comic, standard practice at Palace, where the story was told alongside the game rather than inside it, a solution that made sense when memory was measured in kilobytes. Difficulty is high. There is no map, and remembering how the areas connect falls entirely on you, which was normal for the era and is often the hardest adjustment for a modern player. Anyone who enjoys a slower, atmospheric exploration game and does not mind learning by trial and error will find one of the better examples of British 8-bit work here.
