The Realm Online from Sierra Entertainment stands among the first graphical online role-playing games aimed at a mainstream audience. When it appeared in 1996 that was still a rarity on the PC, since most games where people played together over a network were text-based MUD environments.

Sierra deliberately took a different road from the three-dimensional worlds that followed. The Realm looks like a classic adventure game: two-dimensional screens, hand-painted backdrops, and a character who moves from one location to the next by mouse click. Combat is turn-based rather than real-time, so there is time to consider which spell or attack to use. All of this kept bandwidth requirements low, which mattered enormously in the dial-up era. The game needed no fast response times and worked over connections that would defeat any modern action title.

The social dimension mattered from the start. Players gathered in towns, traded, formed groups and simply talked, and that often held their attention longer than the quests did. The Realm was one of the titles that demonstrated a subscription world could function as an ongoing service rather than something you finish and shelve.

Graphically it has aged exactly as you would expect, but the deliberate pace and turn-based fighting make it play very differently from a modern online RPG: more reading, more waiting, more conversation.
