TetRAM

TetRAM is a miniature DOS take on the falling-block formula, released in 2000. Miniature is meant literally: the whole game weighs in at roughly five kilobytes, less than a single icon takes up on a modern desktop. It was made as a hobby project at a point when DOS had long stopped being a platform anyone released software for — and that stubbornness is perhaps the most interesting thing about it.

Do not expect surprises from the content. This is a variation on the basic falling-block idea: pieces drift down from the top, you rotate and place them so no gaps are left in the stack. There is no story dressing, no bonuses, no ornament of any kind — the author was clearly aiming for the smallest, most direct implementation possible and shaved off everything else. Controls are instant, a round lasts minutes, and your only opponent is yourself. A player in the year 2000, equipped with Windows, a Pentium and modern titles in the drive, had every right to ask who this was for; the answer was the same then as it is now — nobody in particular, and anybody with a soft spot for small things finished out of sheer obstinacy.

An honest verdict: as a game, TetRAM is utterly average. It does nothing that thousands of other block-stacking clones cannot do, and next to the more elaborate variants it has no hook to offer — no twist, no idea of its own, just a cleanly executed baseline. Its value lies elsewhere. It is a specimen of late-DOS microcraft, the gaming equivalent of a ship in a bottle: nobody needs one, but the way it came to exist commands a certain respect.
