NWurm

When you first connected to a MUD server, you expected a title with a bit more fanfare. NWurm was the successor in 1991 to older text-based games played over phone lines — keyboard versus imagination, no colors, no flashy graphics. Just Text. And the network.

It's a fantasy MUD, specifically a game built on mechanics that would remain classic for two more decades: you create a character, run around a map full of monsters, collect experience, buy equipment. In the textual world of Neverwinter, you let yourself loose among players who are real people. The goal isn't to beat a single campaign, but to live in that foreign world — roleplay, find a party, win in PvP battles, or simply hang around by the stream and wait to see if any girls walk by.

You play it simply: you type a command, the game responds with text. Go north, attack the skeleton, buy a potion. Without graphics, everything unfolds in your head — rain on the plain, dust in a dark corridor, sadness in the tavern when your best friend fell. This is exactly what MUDs built their magic on: imagination intertwined with a genuine social element. Here you didn't fall off a platform as a victim of an algorithm — you fell because someone conjured it up and your friend was watching.

NWurm has aged particularly on the outside. Today it looks like a mystery without instructions. You have to guess the commands, the community is gone, the servers are dead. But that feeling — layering knowledge about a world without a map, the joy of discovery, relationships between players lasting months — that remains indigestible. If NWurm looked in the mirror today, it would see the prototypes of all modern MMORPG games, but without the hidden business behind them.

Trying it today is like reading an old diary — it doesn't feel fresh, but it describes something that will never be again. When you find an emulator and a login, you'll understand why your parents asked what you were doing hanging around the computer so long, and why you felt so important.
