You're huddled in some lunar base, dreaming only of those green critters leaving you alone. Moon Bugs from 1983 is a classic DOS arcade that shamelessly borrows from Galaxian or early Space Invaders, except it shifts everything to the moon's surface and throws in more chaotic movement patterns.

You're a lone gunner at the base, and swarms of missing creatures come hurtling at you, blinking like a broken neon spray. The goal? Shoot them all before they get to your throat. Your arsenal is humble — basic shots and the ability to move left and right along the bottom edge of the screen. It's tight, no-nonsense action, full of unexpected turns where you only realize your mistake when the enemy's already crawling out from under your boot.

Playing is never dull, because unlike some slower arcades, things roll fast here. The enemy has a pleasantly chaotic trajectory — you can't find an easy algorithm you could learn by rote. That means every wave feels a tiny bit more chaotic than the last one. The sounds — those beeping effects — will settle into your brain like a spindle and won't leave for a long time after you turn off the computer.

Moon Bugs today feels more like an archive piece than a game you'd plan your evening around. A few minutes in the browser though is just the right balm for this body — it reminds you how little was needed to make a game addictive. A new high score, one more try, new waves. That's all you need.
