Quake Live

Quake Live was id Software's attempt to move arena shooting straight into a web browser. The foundation is Quake III Arena from 1999: identical movement physics, identical weapon set, identical emphasis on respawn timing and armour control. What changed was not the content but the delivery. You created an account, installed a browser plugin, and were in a match within moments, with no boxed copy and no traditional client install. A free-to-play model with a paid tier for extra features was still a fresh idea on the Western scene in 2010.

The appeal rests on what separates arena shooters from the military shooters that displaced them: speed. Strafe jumping, controlled rocket jumps, and knowing exactly when the red armour or the quad damage comes back decide matches. A player who ignores map timing loses to weaker aim. One-on-one duel here plays closer to a fast chess game than to a firefight, and alongside it ran team modes, capture the flag, and instagib variants.

The service carried a built-in skill rating meant to pair evenly matched opponents, and it kept adding new arenas along with reworked versions of classic Quake III maps. The browser layer, however, aged badly. Web plugins were being retired across the industry for security reasons, and the game eventually migrated to a standalone client distributed through Steam. That is the useful historical lesson: solid engineering built on a delivery platform with a limited lifespan.
