Wizard and the Princess dates from 1980 and belongs to the small group of games that genuinely redirected a genre. It came from the studio that would become Sierra and was the second entry in a line of illustrated adventures. That word illustrated is the whole point: at a time when text adventures offered nothing but prose and a command prompt, this one showed you a picture of where you stood.

That sounds trivial today, but it was a hard technical problem. Images could not be stored as complete bitmaps, since neither the memory nor the floppy disk could hold them. Instead each scene was recorded as a sequence of drawing instructions that the computer executed line by line while the player watched. Waiting for a location to finish drawing was simply part of playing.

As an experience it is demanding by modern standards. It relies on a typed parser with a restricted vocabulary, on puzzles with exactly one accepted solution, and on the real possibility of making the game unwinnable without any indication that it has happened. Adventures from 1980 were played with paper, a pencil and a willingness to restart.

Historically, though, it is foundational. Without this line of games the graphical adventure format that Sierra developed for the next fifteen years would have taken a different shape entirely. This Commodore 64 version runs directly in the browser on OldGame.cz, and it is worth loading even briefly just to watch a scene assemble itself stroke by stroke.
