Virtual Winter 1.5a is not really a game, and it is only fair to say so in the first sentence. This 1994 program by Magnum Opus Studios describes itself as an interactive 3D animation of a winter scene: a decorated evergreen stands in the middle of the screen, snow drifts gently down around it in a mild storm, and you poke at the scene from the keyboard — switching the lighting, adjusting elements of the tree, watching the picture change.

To understand why something like this existed as a standalone release, you have to go back to the mid-nineties. Virtual was the magic word of the moment, a prefix that sold anything, and programmers everywhere were testing what an ordinary office PC with a 386 and a VGA card could render in real time. Virtual Winter is exactly that kind of artefact: a technological postcard, a digital snow globe whose makers wanted to show they could animate a three-dimensional scene on everyday hardware.

Being honest about the content: you will exhaust the interactions within a few minutes. Toggle the lights, fiddle with the tree, watch the snowflakes fall — that is the whole repertoire. There is no score, no goal, no challenge, and judging it by the standards of games misses the point, because it never tries to be one. It is a mood, not a mechanic.

If Virtual Winter has any value today, it is as a trip back to a time when falling snow on a monitor could still draw a small crowd, when curiosities like this travelled home on floppy disks to be shown off to visitors. It still works as a quiet Christmas backdrop, too. Just do not expect more than the title promises: a virtual winter, nothing else.
