Idol Hakkenden

Idol Hakkenden is a Japanese Nintendo NES title from 1989, credited to Winning Entertainment Group with no publisher recorded. The second half of the name nods to the classic novel Nansō Satomi Hakkenden about eight dog warriors, a reference Japanese games use as a stock joke, so it identifies no genre by itself.

The record lists a third-person viewpoint. On the eight-bit Nintendo that simply meant the character was visible on screen, whether the game was an action title, a light role-playing game or one of the hybrid shapes Japanese studios of the period liked to try.

1989 was the Famicom's peak. The console had an enormous installed base and carried so many releases that an entire layer of smaller studios made a living on titles aimed purely at the domestic market. This entry belongs to that group: it never reached Europe or America, and its name shows up only in passing in Western overviews.

The moment matters too. In late-1980s Japan, game production was becoming closely entwined with pop music and television, and a title invoking idols sits naturally in that world. Without verified sources, though, it is better to stay with the certainties: the year, the platform, the developer and the camera.
