Bobby Bearing, published by The Edge in 1986 for the ZX Spectrum, stars a metal ball bearing rolling through a sculpted technical landscape of ramps, hollows and moving hazards. The catalogue card lists a side view, but the game is best known for its spatial, isometric presentation, one of the most striking visual tricks 8-bit machines could pull off in the mid eighties.

Controlling a rolling ball brings its own physics: Bobby picks up speed, slides down slopes and takes real finesse to stop exactly where you want. Most of the difficulty grows out of that tension between momentum and precision, there are no enemies shooting at you, just geometry and gravity.

Isometric titles were the showcase of programming skill on the Spectrum. Creating a convincing sense of depth on a machine with no dedicated graphics chip took clever tricks, and games of this type are still cited as examples of squeezing the most out of limited hardware.

The year 1986 marked the peak of the British 8-bit scene and the competition was fierce. A single-player game betting on elegance of movement rather than action stood out as a distinctive choice.
