When Ariva starts, you immediately see that something is missing. It's not a game that welcomes you with an opening scene or film editing. Just a screen appears, and you have to figure out what's actually happening.

It's a rare trick at the time — a puzzle-logic game from 1992 where you solve tasks in a minimalist environment. There's no scenario, no tutorial either. Simply: you see a problem, figures or creatures on the game board, and you have to move them correctly to move on. It's something between Sokoban and music — if music was silence and frustration.

Playing is clean and precisely because of that, unprecedentedly hard. Short pauses between things moving, time to think, but at the same time you feel the pressure. Mouse controls, simple interface, no frills. Each level is a miniature puzzle that looks like nothing, but within twenty seconds you're already biting your nails. It mocks you. And you know it, yet you continue.

Ariva didn't catch on at the time because it wasn't flashy, had no story, and players didn't feel like they were doing something significant. But these are exactly the games that stick with you when you come back to them twenty years later. They're not beautiful, they're not famous. They're just there, quiet and hard.

Playing it today means returning to a time when computer games didn't have to explain everything and serve it on a silver platter. When you start it in a browser, it's not nostalgia — it's the ability to admit that some things are worth it precisely because they're not for everyone.
