Jump!

If someone decided to make the simplest platformer imaginable, they'd end up with Jump! — and that's not a criticism. In the nineties, hundreds of games crawled across MS-DOS where you jumped on white squares and collected stuff, but this is one of those games you didn't even register, even though it was right next to Aladdin Deluxe in that pirate floppy disk shop.

It's straightforward — you jump forward across platforms, collect points, dodge enemies, and reach the end of the level. No story, no dialogue, no fairy tale. Creatures crawl across the screen, you jump over them, and that's it. The mechanics are what you know from Donkey Kong or a dozen cheaper clones — except here everything actually works, without any glitchy disasters. Controls are straightforward, gravity exists, the jump has weight. Nothing fancy, but nothing you'll punch into a wall over.

What's striking about Jump! is the graphics. Those squares and little characters look like a practice assignment — minimalist to the point where you wonder if any pixel-art effort went into this at all. The sounds are that typical DOS beeping when someone hit some tone combination. Stress-free, pretense-free. Levels repeat fast, you can't count on difficulty scaling — you're more likely to hit how predictable each level is.

Jump! belongs in that category of games whose only value is that they exist at all. It wasn't a gem everyone remembers, but it's not even one of those you have to check out for historical reasons — like Lemmings or Prince of Persia. It's more like blank space on the hard drive of time, taken up by some nobody among millions of others.

Today you play it out of curiosity — to convince yourself how simple things were when every KB of memory mattered. That anthropological walk through the nineties. Fun? Probably not. Added value? Zero. But there's nothing wrong with it — it's just a game that existed alongside thousands of others, all competing for the attention of some kid at a computer. Jump! lost from the start.
