WFM – Football Manager for Windows is a freeware football management sim written in 1993 by the Norwegian author Lars Erik Bolstad. You take over a club, handle the squad and the finances, and steer the team through league, cup and European competition; it plays entirely through Windows dialogs and tables rather than animated matches.

Its domestic significance rests on one detail: alongside England, Italy and Germany it modelled the Norwegian Eliteserien and the 1st and 2nd Divisions. British management series of the era ignored Nordic football, so this was where Norwegian players could finally run their own club. A small community has kept the game alive ever since.

About the platform 1981–2000

For two decades MS-DOS was the main gaming platform on PCs. Games launched from the command line and used sound cards like Sound Blaster or AdLib. DOS is the home of legends such as Doom, Prince of Persia and Commander Keen.
