À propos de Blocks from Hell

Ce test n’est pas encore traduit — nous affichons la version originale (English).

Here's something peculiar: a puzzle game from 1993 that pretends it's going to scare you. No, it's not a horror game, but the title promises something dark. You open it and discover it's basically Tetris in Hell — stones fall from above, you stack them into rows, they disappear. Only with the twist that the environment looks like a rather shabby RPG location full of bones and dark colors.

It's a simple mechanic you know like the back of your hand. You orient the blocks just before they land, and if you manage to fill a row without gaps, it vanishes and you get points. Nothing revolutionary. Your goal is straightforward: play until the game crashes down on your head. Difficulty ramps up gradually, blocks fall faster, and suddenly you realize the middle of the screen is growing toward the top. Classic formula, no surprises.

You'll control it with mouse or keyboard, depending on which version you get your hands on. There's nothing sophisticated here — rotation, move left, move right, drop. What makes the game confusing is precisely the absence of anything new. Falling blocks, scoring, game over. After twenty minutes you know what you're in for. It's not about the game telling you something profound, it's about keeping you occupied during a boring evening.

Blocks from Hell sits somewhere on the edge of retro memory — it's not Tetris, it's not Klax, it's not even Puyo Puyo. It's more the kind of game you'd download from a shareware CD and play fifty times. Then you'd forget about it. The design doesn't help — it's thematic, sure, but definitely not original.

If you're in the mood for a quick round without major stakes, it works. You'll find it in a browser, launch it, and you've got half an hour of entertainment. But expect a puzzle game from an era when not many creators bothered with this sort of thing. It's not bad, just forgettable. And that's worse than being bad.
