Hot Chase

Konami's Hot Chase from 1988 leans on the technique the company had refined across the decade: large sprites scaled smoothly toward the player to sell speed without any polygons involved. It was a cheaper and, at the time, far more convincing illusion than early 3D could manage, and it defined how arcade driving looked for years. The task is straightforward — keep the car moving, hit the checkpoints, and do not let traffic or terrain rob you of the seconds you need.

The handling model is arcade through and through. There is no tyre simulation, no gearing setup, no sense that the car has mass beyond what the animation implies. Contact slows you rather than ending the run, and the whole experience is engineered around short bursts of tension designed to keep a player at the cabinet exactly long enough to feed in another coin. That was the economics of the arcade floor in the late eighties, and the game makes no attempt to disguise it.
