Om Rogue Clone

Denne anmeldelse er endnu ikke oversat — vi viser originalen (English).

The screen lights up. A character — just a symbol — finds itself in a maze that looks like someone drew it with a rough pencil. Welcome to Rogue Clone, one of many attempts in the eighties to replicate the legendary Rogue from 1980. The result, however, is strangely honest: it knows what it wants, and doesn't lie about its qualities.

It's a procedurally generated dungeon crawler on MS-DOS, where each game begins differently — the map is created randomly, as is the placement of monsters and treasure. You're faced with minimalist graphics made up of ASCII characters and simple shapes. The goal is simple: descend deeper into the dungeons, collect artifacts, and survive.

Gameplay is classic — arrow keys or cursors to move, keyboard shortcuts for actions. Combat is turn-based: you move, the monster moves. You'll need clever positioning and good equipment to avoid meeting your end on the next flight of stairs. The problem is that the game is painfully difficult, and sometimes it feels like you're rolling dice rather than thinking strategically. Death is permanent — when you fall, it's over. You'll be struck by how little the game explains. Navigation in the game world is a bottomless pit — no map, no compass, just you and a heap of question marks.

Rogue Clone seems almost unplayable at first glance today. The original Rogue had genius in its simplicity and replayability; this version remains faithful to the template to the point of forgetting what made it fun. It lacks guidance, player feedback, the slightest hint. Graphically, it was logically revolutionary for its time — the computer brought the dungeon into the living room — but today it looks like a tool for abandoning it.

It's worth playing if you're drawn to the early history of roguelikes and want to feel how brutal the genre's beginnings were. It runs fine in a browser, and that purity — no gimmicks, just meat and dice — has its charm. But expect not to like the game. That's O.K. It's supposed to be that way.
