Om African Raiders-01

Denne anmeldelse er endnu ikke oversat — vi viser originalen (English).

You've got an old quad bike in the garage and one single thought in your head: go fast and go far. African Raiders isn't about sweating at the wheel, but rather about smiling at how little you need to have fun. The simplicity of this DOS racing simulator from the late eighties is both its greatest asset and its biggest drawback.

We're driving across an African desert in a flat 2D perspective that resembles a top-down shooter, except here we're only "shooting" by pressing the gas. The terrain moves beneath your vehicle's body, colors are pixelated and quirky — classic retro-DOS charm. The goal is to reach a certain destination without running out of gas completely or destroying your vehicle by driving too recklessly over obstacles. There's nothing here about pretending you're sitting in a cockpit; it's pure top-down abstraction with a wimpy physics model.

Control is basic but precise — throttle, brake, and maybe shift left or right. Your car won't obey instantly; it has a certain inertia that's frustrating at times and fun at others. The terrain and tiny vehicles on screen mean you have to look carefully to figure out what's where. There are no graphical bells and whistles, everything is simple, almost abstract. After a while though, you get the hang of it and realize it's not so bad; the gameplay has its own rhythm.

African Raiders is an interesting relic that holds onto a specific atmosphere. It's not a revolution, just a straightforward racing simulator that nobody would design like this today — it feels too much like an old PC game that knew what it wanted and didn't worry about anything else. In its time it was good for a laugh; today it mostly offers a window into how simple things could entertain.

If you've got some time and boredom hasn't won over curiosity yet, it's an OK way to remind yourself how little code was needed for fun in an era when disk space was expensive. It's not a masterpiece, but it'll definitely hold up through this review.
