I remember the first time I fired up DreamWeb and saw that top-down view of a nighttime city — dark, wet, lonely. No action, no dungeons full of monsters. Just one man waking from nightmares, knowing he has to kill.

DreamWeb from 1994 by British studio Creative Reality is a cyberpunk adventure with a grim story and an unusually mature tone. You play as Ryan, whose dreams tell him he's the chosen guardian of a mystical network called DreamWeb — a kind of spiritual glue holding the world together. And that he needs to eliminate seven powerful people threatening this network. The game doesn't even try to pretend you're a hero. Instead, the question haunts you the whole time: is Ryan a prophet, or a psychopath?

The controls are point-and-click, the inventory is straightforward, and the puzzles aren't cruel — DreamWeb focuses more on atmosphere than on convoluted logic puzzles. The city is rendered in isometric view, where every apartment, bar, or dark alley has its own character. The dialogue is written with unexpected care and the game doesn't hold the player's hand at all. Violence is present, sex too — not as provocation, but as part of a world that looks mature and a bit grimy, as cyberpunk should be. The CD version included voice acting that wasn't bad for the time, but it wouldn't have won any competitions.

DreamWeb is remembered precisely because it dared to be different. While most adventures of that era either raced each other in length or fought with Sierra over who had prettier graphics, this game bet on mood and moral ambiguity. Today it's aged pretty gracefully — pixel art has its own atmosphere and the story doesn't feel cheap or dated. The controls are a bit clunky at times and the game world is smaller than you'd wish, but that's not fatal.

Today DreamWeb suits anyone who wants a shorter adventure — easily playable in an afternoon — with a story that doesn't ask unnecessary questions but leaves the one key question wide open.
