The result was Captain Bible in the Dome of Darkness — perhaps the strangest piece of edutainment ever to squeeze through a floppy disk drive.

The setting is as straightforward as Sunday morning preaching. A city trapped under a dark dome, mad robots spreading lies and heresies, and the only hope is the titular hero equipped with a computer Bible. Bible Corps sends the Captain inside through a single crack. Salvation or nothing. Genre-wise, it's a mix of action and adventure with a pronounced educational component — the target audience is clearly children from conservative American families, not teenagers looking for Doom.

The mechanics are simple: you walk through the dome, encounter robots that present you with various claims — and you must pull out the correct Bible quote to refute them. Without the right answer, the robot defeats you; with the right one, it leaves. There's virtually no direct combat in the shooting or slashing sense. So the game is actually a quiz wrapped in an adventure package. It creaks a bit if you're imagining action — character movement is stiff, the environment fairly repetitive, and difficulty depends mainly on how well you know the New Testament. What has aged worst is the game loop: the endlessly repeated challenge-quote-reward format wears thin quickly, and the world of the dome offers nothing that pulls the player forward for purely gameplay reasons. It's simply a teaching tool masquerading as a game.

Who will enjoy it today? Collectors of gaming oddities and researchers of the edutainment genre will find it invaluable.
