Correction: If you thought nothing could happen in a text adventure without pictures, Beyond Zork will quickly change your mind. In 1987, Infocom deployed a combination of classic text adventure with RPG elements — and therefore numbers, statistics, and permanent character death from a character you'd grown attached to.
You're a visitor to the mysterious world of Quendor, where you try to obtain the Coconut of Quendor while building a character with attributes like Strength, Intelligence, and Charisma. The game throws you into a world without a map, without a guide, without sentiment — and it's keen to let you know it. You don't have weapons in your inventory, you have them in your stats, and if you don't take cover cleverly, you'll be blown out of the dungeon quick.
It plays the same as it did back then: you type commands, the game responds with text. The basic vocabulary works, but Beyond Zork expects specificity — not just "go," but "go north" or "take coins." Combat works on a turn-based system where you choose between attacking, casting spells, and defending, with everything depending on your stats. A mistake in choosing an action costs you health, and Quendor doesn't give you breaks — you die, the game ends, start over. That looked like a revolution in the eighties, today it's more of a test of patience.
For players of that era, Beyond Zork was groundbreaking — RPG mechanics in a text adventure was a piece of innovation that only Infocom tackled. Today, however, the show-stealing elements: text without graphics looks like plowed ground, the form of play is tedious, hidden solutions are sometimes just nonsense. The game ages worse than Zork Three, where there was at least more to laugh about.
If you have the time and appetite to hunt solutions through trial and error, Beyond Zork is worth exploring — it's an artifact from a time when a text game meant you engaged your brain in a completely different way. You can still handle it in an online emulator without needing original diskettes and instructions from the box, but if you're not a fan of loud frustration, you might as well stick with the classic Zork Trilogy.
