While others were enjoying colorful point-and-click adventures in 1990, Hard Nova reminds you that some things matter more than graphics. I'd say way too much more.

It's a futuristic strategy RPG where you command an army across the galaxy. You collect units, upgrade equipment, wage war against enemies, and try to reach safety. The setting is space, but atmosphere is in short supply. Rules reign supreme, and learning them is a process.

You play mostly through menus and text lists. You select units, choose tactics, the game pits you against your opponent, and you watch the statistics add and subtract. There's no graphical battle—just numbers and messages like "Your unit is defeated." Prep time for combat lasts longer than the actual clash. If you crave interactivity and want to actually see your soldiers firing, you'll be frustrated.

Hard Nova is a game for a very specific breed of player—those for whom games are puzzles and systems first, experience second. Its release was bold for its time. Today it seems archaic even by those standards. Without a tutorial, you get lost in the rules. Playing feels tedious and often boring.

Still, Hard Nova has its charm—if you're patient enough. The game offers genuine strategic freedom and depth that many 90s titles only promised through looks. Here you actually have to think. For fans of deep games without gloss, and for those who want to know what sci-fi RPGs looked like before they became fun.
