3D Lemmings Winterland

Anyone who thought lemmings could make do with two dimensions was mistaken. In 1995, these little fellows ventured into the third dimension and, like proper tourists in Winterland, immediately forgot all their old tricks. What worked like a charm in the original now often ends up in a puddle or hanging in space like laundry.

3D Lemmings sticks to the same foundation — you need to get the purple critters from point A to point B while keeping enough of them alive. Only now you're moving through isometric perspective and space takes on new dimensions. The task sounds simple, but pulling it off is treacherous. The lemmings do what they want, you just assign them roles — builder, digger, faller, flyer — and hope like hell it somehow works out.

The problem is that the jump into 3D doesn't belong here. The isometric perspective seems fine on the surface, but it doesn't really make spatial orientation any easier. Lemmings fall at the wrong time because you can't properly map their trajectory, even when you know their speed. You can't control the camera, so your lemming disappears behind the landscape just when you need to see where it's falling. The winter setting is purely winter — snow, glaciers, cycling terrain — but the game only uses it visually. The mechanics stay the same, just compressed into a box with reduced clarity.

Looking at it in ads and marketing from back then, it seems like a breakthrough. In reality, it's a cautious experiment that only half succeeded. The original had one advantage — when something went wrong, you knew why. Here you're guessing angles and depths, which isn't ideal for a logic game. You trust your lemmings less and less. Especially when the game demands precision and you're never quite sure what precision you actually have.

Today you look at it with respect for its boldness, but without much interest in actually playing it. There are better 3D experiments from that era, and the original Lemmings does what it set out to do — logic — better. But if you're curious how the early nineties tried to cram the third dimension everywhere it didn't belong, Winterland is an enlightening footnote in gaming history. Some things just weren't ready for prime time yet.
