Om Windows 3.0

Den här recensionen är inte översatt än — vi visar originalet (English).

If I told you that the most famous operating system of the nineties started as a four-color icon and windows that looked like paper folders, you'd probably think I was joking. But Windows 3.0 from 1990 was exactly that — a graphical interface for DOS, which still peeked out from the command line here and there.

It's not a game you'd download and play. It's an operating system that preceded win95, which then changed the world. In 1990, computers were still the domain of enthusiasts and hobbyists. Windows 3.0 is the first version that convinced people that a mouse and icons weren't just a toy, but a genuinely more comfortable way forward than typing c:\dir and c:\cd.

You'd launch Solitaire, not because it was a legitimate game, but because it came with the package. Mouse training. Those windows had standard buttons — File, Edit, Help. The background color was dark as the inside of an archive. The font was terribly angular. If you open an emulation of it today, you'll immediately notice how slowly everything rendered and how silly it looked — yet it was precisely this approach that Microsoft stamped onto the operating system that people would trust for thirty years.

Computer users of the time either loved or hated Windows 3.0. No middle ground. There was too much that was new — launching programs with a mouse, switching between them without turning the machine off, windows side by side. At the same time, it was a performance disaster. DOS was still faster and more responsive. Windows 3.0 ran at seventy percent of the CPU and memory capacity a program would normally require.

Today it's more of a museum piece than something you'd want to try again. You miss the mouse with the rollerball (which would get stuck with resin gunk), the 640x480 resolution monitors, the blinking cursor. There's no fun in it in the classical sense — yet when you run it, you encounter the genes of all future windows. There's the DNA of what came later, but in its simplest, slowest form. If we want to understand the nineties, we can't overlook Windows 3.0 — it was the moment when the computer stopped being a black box and became a tool that even your dad could understand.
