Om spelet

When in the eighties your computer tried to teach you English, it was a reliable signal that boredom awaited. Electronic Grammar Parts of Speech is exactly that type of educational software—something parents bought and you'd sit with a classmate in the computer lab to find out if there was a hidden game in it.

Electronic Grammar Parts of Speech – screenshot 1

It's a program designed to teach the basics of English grammar, specifically distinguishing different parts of speech. You get words and must categorize them correctly—nouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions, and the rest of the word categories. Nothing fancy, but for nineties high school it was a relatively sensible tool if your teacher was weak.

Gameplay is what you'd expect: a word appears on screen, you select the right category from options. If you're correct, you move on. If not, the program tells you without sugar-coating it. Graphics are dark—text menus and blue monitor background. Sound? More of a signal when you mess up than any music or atmosphere. After a minute it stops being fun unless you genuinely care about this.

The merit of Electronic Grammar Parts of Speech was that it existed and worked. Something was better than nothing. Kids struggling with English felt smarter when they managed it. Everyone else made fun of it. Today it's a curiosity—proof of what education looked like in an era when computers served as substitutes for lazy teachers.

If you want to understand how unentertaining computer education tools can be, here you have it. It didn't age badly—it was just dumb back in the nineties. You can run it today mainly from nostalgia or curiosity, not because it will actually teach you English better than a textbook.
