When Duke Nukem 3D stormed the PC in 1996, nobody expected to see it two years later on the 16-bit Mega Drive. Yet that is exactly what happened in Brazil, where Sega's console lived on far longer than anywhere else thanks to local distributor Tectoy. In 1998 the company's own engineers wrote an engine from scratch and squeezed Duke onto the ageing hardware, producing a port that was never officially sold outside Brazil.

Technically it is a small miracle and a big compromise at once. The game offers nine levels loosely inspired by the Lunar Apocalypse episode, redrawn into flat, strictly right-angled layouts reminiscent of Wolfenstein 3D. The code is entirely Tectoy's own work; only the artwork came from the PC original, converted with a purpose-built in-house tool. Duke still shoots, grabs keycards and drops his one-liners, just slower and blockier than PC veterans remember.

That is precisely why this cartridge became a legend of the Brazilian scene and one of the most famous technical curiosities of the 16-bit era. The ROM header is stamped June 1998, a time when the rest of the world was already moving on to 3D accelerator cards. Collectors pay serious money for a Brazilian original today, but you can play this rarity right in your browser on OldGame.cz.
