Tecmo World Cup Soccer was released in 1990 by the Japanese company Tecmo for the Nintendo NES. It shows the pitch from above, the most common approach to football on eight-bit machines, since a top-down view fits a modest resolution while still keeping the team's shape visible.

1990 was a good year for football games. A World Cup was taking place and publishers responded accordingly. Tecmo was running its own console sports line at the time, aimed not at simulation but at a fast, readable arcade treatment with short matches and simple rules.

The controls typically come down to a few buttons: pass, shoot and tackle. Differences between individual players on the pitch are slight, so the emphasis falls on shot timing and on how the team behaves off the ball. A tournament structure then supplies a reason to keep going past a single match.

By 1990 the NES was a well-established machine and sports games formed their own category alongside platformers. Their strength lay in short sessions and in passing the controller around, which still holds true today even if the hardware looks different.

Tecmo built its sports games around a simple principle at the time: a legible pitch, few buttons and a match state you can read at a glance. Simulation detail was left aside, since the eight-bit console had neither the processing power nor a controller with enough buttons to support it.
