James Bond 007: The Duel was released in 1993 by Domark, listed in the catalogue as both developer and publisher, and it is a side-view action game for the Sega Mega Drive. The Bond branding is obvious, but in play it is straightforward platform action rather than an espionage game of disguises and dialogue.

The structure is direct. A level is a segmented environment traversed sideways and vertically, the agent has limited ammunition and health, and objectives along the way carry a time limit. That mix of shooting, jumping and finding the right order of steps is typical of licensed action games in the early nineties.

Domark was one of the British publishers that leaned heavily on film and television licences. The Bond name had been adapted many times across platforms by then and always differently, from simulators to adventures; the sixteen-bit console versions stayed in the action register, because that translated most easily onto a three-button pad.

The Mega Drive managed fast scrolling and reasonably large sprites, so games of this type looked sharp and moved smoothly. The price was a narrower palette than its rival's, which showed more than the developers would have liked in darker environments. The record lists a single player, which fits an action adaptation of a film licence, since shared play was then reserved mostly for sports and racing titles.
