Dizzy here, Dizzy there, Dizzy everywhere. If you had a PC in the '90s, you knew who this egg-shaped furball was. Fantasy World Dizzy is the third installment from British developer Codemasters and takes you through a fantasy world teeming with goblins, dragons, and other creatures from old tales. 1991 — a time when it became clear that computer platformers could do more than just bounce across monkey temples.
It plays like a classic platformer with adventure elements. You control Dizzy, a round little grump who moves across the screen left and right, collecting items. The goal? Gather all the pieces of a magic book scattered somewhere across the level. It's not just about jumping over pits — you have to figure out what to grab, where to put it, how to use it. A mug here, a cross there. There are plenty of logic puzzles like this, so it actually feels more like a point-and-click adventure dressed up as a platformer than a simple jumper.
The mechanics work, but they're not original. Dizzy moves rather clumsily — you need to jump carefully, or he tumbles down. Controls are precise, which you'll appreciate when you're standing on a platform as wide as a pencil. The screen is packed with things, graphics are simple but readable. Moving through the level is sometimes frustratingly slow, which alternates with occasionally clunky jumping physics. This double-edged sword keeps nagging at you until the end.
Fantasy World Dizzy isn't groundbreaking in the Dizzy series, but it belonged in the collection of nearly every high schooler with a 486. The series managed to combine action with logic — that was the recipe for success in the '90s. The game became cult more because of its presence in offices, schools, and every other house than because it had anything revolutionary. It's aged poorly due to the harshness of puzzle-solving (mess up one thing, the level's ruined) and the slow pace of gameplay itself.
Today you'll look at it with nostalgia or without it — depending on whether you played it. The mechanics aren't bad, just unremarkable. It's a careful, precise game from a time when platformers didn't need reinventing, just polishing. You'll find it in emulators easily. Half an hour with coffee? Sure. But a whole day? You'd have to be born in the '80s.
